Five years ago we completed an extensive backup software test. Years have passed and much has changed on Windows backup software market. This time we decided to make a comparative review of modern backup software applications available on Microsoft Windows 8, 7, and XP, with an emphasis on speed, size, stability and efficiency of backup operation. We are pleased to announce the resulting report along the conclusions found. The findings are primarily targeted at a typical home or small business computer user running any Windows computer or laptop.
The conclusion: Argentum Backup is the fastest and lightest Windows backup software package available on the market. It can work more efficiently and use fewer computer resources, leading to more efficient energy use. Efficient energy use is essential in slowing the global energy demand growth in order to stabilize and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the world. Efficient energy use is high priority in the environmentally sustainable software computing and so-called Green computing. The efficiency of internal software algorithms has an impact on the amount of computer resources required and the level of induced carbon dioxide emissions. In 2000, when we first introduced Argentum
Backup - our popular backup utility - it had a price of $25 only. It remained so
for 10 years until 2010 when we changed the price to $29 only. According to
World Bank data the inflation rate in developed countries was 1% to 3% in 2000-2010
typically, and there was a visible spike of up to 4% to 5% in year 2011 alone.
National inflation rates in developing countries vary widely in individual cases
but are usually 2 to 3 times higher comparing to developed countries. The
accumulated inflation rate of consumer prices from 2000 to 2012 is 34% for US,
36% for UK, 32% for Eurozone, and 47% for Australia.
Rather than increasing the prices of all software, we decided to raise the price of just Argentum Backup. The decision to raise or lower prices is a tough one. We think it is the right time to do so. We expect it to stay on the same level for another 10 years. Most Windows backup software vendors, that charged $35 for a single software license in 2005, currently charge around $59 for a fully-featured backup software package for Windows. Microsoft Corporation announced the global
availability of its popular Windows operating system, Windows 8™.
Microsoft Windows 8™ offers a new user interface, which is a radical
redesign, introducing a touch-enabled interface in an attempt to bridge the gap
between personal computers and mobile devices. The Start screen replaces the
Start menu of all earlier Windows versions. Windows 8 includes new features,
such as native USB 3.0 support, Windows Store online service, a new programming
platform, the Windows Runtime (WinRT), and more. The debut of Windows 8 is the
biggest change to the system since 1995.
Windows Backup and Restore, the former built-in backup program of Windows, is deprecated in Windows 8. It is still included, but will not be updated in the future. Windows Backup has been renamed to Windows 7 File Recovery. Windows 8 File History is another feature, but it is not a complete backup tool. It only backs up the files in your Libraries, such as your personal documents, files, and media.
